The Bird Buddy – A bird watchers new best friend?

Imagine waking up to a personal nature documentary, right in your backyard. That’s the magic of Bird Buddy, a revolutionary video bird feeder that transforms your view of our feathered friends into an immersive, interactive experience. It’s not just about birdwatching; it’s about connection, conservation, and the sheer joy of discovery. So, is the Bird Buddy – A bird watchers new best friend?

What is the Bird Buddy?

Simply put, the Bird Buddy is your bird-watching companion. It’s a cute little bird feeder that comes in a number of different bright colors (I’m sure you can find one that fits your yard), that utilizes an AI-Powered camera to snap photos and video while also identifying your feathered visitors.

Features

Here are some of the features of the Bird Buddy.

  • Comes in two colors, blue or yellow (other colors available for their other feeder types such as humminbird).
  • HD camera with built-in battery that captures 1080p video (with subscription) and HD images.
  • Made of recycled plastics
  • Modular – you can add on attachments to bring in additional bird types.
  • Solar roof option (a must, more as to why below).

What we like about the Bird Buddy

It’s just fun all around.

But seriously, what do we like about the Bird Buddy? Well it was very easy to setup first of all. We mounted it on our fence and really once you have the app and account up and running, it’s very much a plug and play experience. The other thing that is great is the image quality, it’s really great being able to see them up close and personal, it’s something the household gets a kick out of every couple days looking to see who visited. The final thing that we really like is the solar roof, we opted for the solar roof option and found that it is a must. It keeps the battery topped off, even in the snowy winter months.

What we don’t like about the Bird Buddy

The first gripe that luckily we don’t deal with all that much is the battery life. If you have an active backyard, the battery is horrible. We’ve only noticed it on cloudy weeks when the solar isn’t producing a lot, the battery drains quickly. I couldn’t imagine not having the solar roof option, it would mean probably weekly we would need to bring the camera inside for an hour or so to charge it. Another gripe is the fact there is a subscription for some of the premium features. It’s called Bird Buddy Pro and runs $30 a year, this unlocks the ability to access other feeders, ignore species, invite 10 friends to view your feeder, high-res video, and max out your captures with “frenzy mode”.

Cost and Final Thoughts

This bird feeder will set you back between $250-$300 depending on a few things. The version we have includes the solar roof and full price is $300. Now we got it during a sale, they are often on sale which is nice. There are a few accessories you can add to the feeder if you’d like but not necessary to get up and running.

My final thoughts, there are a variety of other video based bird feeders out there and I can’t speak to them. What I like about the Bird Buddy is the look, how compact everything is and frankly the app is pretty well made. Is it worth the $50-$100 more than the other options seen on Amazon, I’m not sure, I can only say what I think about the Bird Buddy. All of that said, is this worth the money? If you or someone in your household enjoys wildlife and bird watching, yes it’s worth it. Our family has really enjoyed seeing all of the various birds visit and at the same time learn more and more about them.

So, for $250-$300 it’s not a quick purchase, but it does make a wonderful gift for the right person. I would say that the Bird Buddy is a bird watchers new best friend!
