AndrewThis time I’m going to do things a bit different. Yes I’ve spent some time with the camera and watched my daughter use it for a few weeks now. But at the end of the day, only one person can really say if it’s a solid starter camera or not, my daughter. SO, this VTech KidiZoom Camera Review will include some of her thoughts and some of her photos.
What Is The VTech KidiZoom Camera?
The VTech KidiZoom Camera is a starter camera for kids. Aiming for kids in that 3+ range. The form factor is made for the little hands to hold it easily while also allowing them the ability to easily use the various controls.
Let’s talk features real quick. This list is pretty short and that’s because this thing is nice and simple.
Features:
- 2.0 megapixel digital camera with 4X zoom, 1.8” screen and four games; create a Talking Photo using your own photo, voice and voice effects
- Experiment with 40+ camera effects like photo frames, stamps, kaleidoscope effects, collages, video themes and more

- MicroSD card slot for memory expansion up to 32GB (card not included); transfer data to computer (USB cord not included)
- Intended for ages 3–8 years; requires 4 AA batteries; batteries included for demo purposes only; new batteries recommended for regular use
VTech KidiZoom Camera Review – From My Daughter
I won’t be using my daughters name, sorry, she’ll be ”kiddo”. But this was a lot of fun to ask her for help on this. She was VERY excited to help in a review of her camera. So here we go, I’ll also drop a gallery of a few of her photos after our little Q&A.
Me: Do you like your camera?
Kiddo: I just really like taking pictures, it’s easy. I also like that I get to look at my own pictures whenever I want especially my favorite ones.
Me: Is it easy to use?
Kiddo: YEAH! Even for you! (Me on the inside: Thanks…)
Me: If you could change something about it, what would you change?
Kiddo: I wish it was a little, a lot easier to find the thing I’m looking for on the screen. I sometimes don’t use the buttons right and it gets frustrating.
Me: Do you think other kids would like this camera?
Kiddo: I think so…but this one’s mine, I could share, but if they like taking pictures, they should really get their own.
Me: What is your favorite part about your camera?
Kiddo: That’s it’s my own camera, I get to take whatever pictures I want.
Me: What’s your favorite thing to take pictures of?
Kiddo: Flowers, lots of flowers…oh and Chase dog. I like to zoom in on Chase’s face, it’s funny.
Me: Anything other kids should know about using this camera?
Kiddo: Taking pictures takes practice. So I take a lot sometimes.
Me: Any final thoughts on the camera or photography?
Kiddo: Um no, I don’t really need to tell you anything else right now.
What I Like About It
There are a number of things I like about this camera for my daughter. She has shown us interest in taking photos over the last year and we wanted a camera for her. My favorite feature of this VTech KidiZoom camera is the overall form of it. She can easily hold it, aim, and snap a photo. Obviously it’s made for kids, but they kept this in mind when it came to the physical design.
This is a plus for her and perhaps a bit of a minus for my wife and I. The photo file size is VERY small, I’m talking 400-800kb, but it shouldn’t be surprising with a 2MP camera (think iPhone 3G).
To this point, I do like that it takes a micro SD. I dropped one in and now she’ll never run out of space, so she can take as many photos of flowers and Chase as she’d like.
The parental lock on the games is rather nice, this is a camera, she doesn’t need another gaming device in her life, her iPad is enough. So being able to, at least for now, lock her out from those has been a plus. I say ”for now” because she will easily be able to turn it off once she learns how to read haha.
What I Don’t Like About It
There aren’t a lot of things just yet that I dislike. Yes, it’s plastic and cheap. But it doesn’t feel necessarily cheap in the hands. She’s dropped it a few times and to be honest there’s no sign of it happening. I don’t like that it’s run on 4 AA batteries. As much as this is unfortunate, I knew I’d put a 4 pack of the Pale Blue Earth batteries in so I can recharge those. But that said, this camera would be great if it were rechargeable. From a user side of things it would have done so much better with a D-Pad style navigation. The joystick on the back isn’t great and I find my daughter getting frustrated often because she intends for it to navigate one way but even the slightest mistake sends the selection in another direction. So having the D-Pad style with specific, directional controls would help.
Cost & Final Thoughts On the VTech KidiZoom Camera
I’m going to lump this one into a single sections for this post. So from a cost side of things if you are looking at just the camera and not batteries & memory upgrades you are looking at about $35 (currently on sale). For the quality of the camera and the fun it brings with it, that’s not a crazy price tag.

With price in mind, the things I like about it, and the pure joy it’s brought to my little photographer. It’s easy for me to say this is a keeper. I spent a lot of time looking at cameras for her, there are some other options out there but I found myself continually going back to VTech and their cameras. I’m happy with this purchase and most importantly, so is my daughter. It’s got her looking at life differently, enjoying the moment and wanting to capture those moments so that she can go back and enjoy them.
