The EGO Power+ Select Cut Mower

This summer we decided it was time to replace our 10+ year-old lawn mower. If we were going to buy something I wanted to make the upgrade worth it. I did a lot of research and pretty quickly decided I wanted to get an electric mower, I’ve been slowly moving all of our outdoor equipment to electric so this was the last remaining summer-related item. I bounced between a number of brands and models at the end of the day we land on the EGO Power+ Select Cut Mower. Now you may be asking, why this one? Frankly, it came down to a few things but two factors played the biggest factor into it all, 1 the online reviews and 2 I have a few neighbors with it and they love it.

What’s great about the EGO POWER+ Select Cut Mower?

Well, first of all, it does a fantastic job with the lawn. I wasn’t sure how the dual blade setup would do, but their “Select Cut” works rather well even mulching that lovely wet and thick spring lawn. On the note of the blades, EGO provides an additional set of blades, so even though I’ll sharpen them it will be nice to have a set to replace them over time.

Battery life, oh boy this is one that surprised me. I know they say in their specs that you can expect 60 minutes of use. However, I’ve seen around 70 minutes of use plus days of ideal time. Granted I keep my lawn in shape, mowing at least once a week, but I also don’t mulch often. I can say that when I was doing early spring cuts, you know when that grass grows like crazy and it’s nice and wet, I was getting closer to 60 minutes on the battery. For most lawns, this is perfectly fine and one battery gets the job done. Getting close to empty just drop it on the charger and come back after a half hour or so and you’re good to go. I really don’t mind this in the dead of summer as that little break in charge time will let me cool down when it’s 90+ degrees outside.

A few more things I enjoy about this lawn mower. First I honestly didn’t expect this one, it is very quiet compared to a fuel-based mower, it was the first thing my wife and daughter said when we got it. Second, the size for storage, holy cow when this thing folds up it takes up very little space not to mention you can keep it upright for storage since it doesn’t have any fluids in it. I’ve even seen a few folks hang it up on their garage wall to get it off the floor (I haven’t done that). Finally, the safety of it and how it runs. I was a bit worried being that it’s electric and when the battery is in it the mower is “always on”, I was concerned with my daughter playing with it. Well, to engage the blade there is a two-step process that even I fumble with sometimes, so I know my daughter can’t get it running. That being said I make sure I don’t store the mower in the garage with the battery still inside.

What’s Not So Great?

Yes, I’m overall very happy with it and obviously will keep it for many years to come. That being said there’s no such thing as a perfect product. First of all, it’s expensive, when writing this you can get it for about $650. Part of that is because this model comes with the battery and a charger, you can purchase it without those but if this is new for you, what would be the point?

After the price, the three things that I don’t love about the EGO mower are as follows. First, the self-propelled portion of this mower is a bit “meh” I do like that you can adjust the speed but sometimes it goes a bit fast and can result in some poor cuts. Second, if I decide to not engage the propelled wheels they sometimes lock up. When I say lock up, they literally lock up and stop turning and the only way to “fix” this is to engage the self-propelled features. My last issue with this mower, EVERYTHING is plastic…well almost everything. I understand the use of plastic to drop the weight and in turn have the battery last longer but there are a few areas I feel should have metal, like the under the panel, I’m sure the plastic will hold up but will I get 10+ years out of it?

Final Thoughts & Cost

At the end of the day if you are looking for a big upgrade to your lawn mower and want to go electric, snag one of these or at least an EGO. I’m very happy overall with the brand and the product after several months of use. They often go on sale on various sites so keep an eye out, obviously if buying local and you have “off-seasons” that would be the best time to shop for it.

It’s a $600 lawn mower that I hope lasts many years to come. EGO makes a few models that come in around the $300 mark. I think if you are already in the EGO system with items like their leaf blower, string trimmer, or their snowblower you can utilize the same battery (for some) and that cuts cost. That being said, in the coming years I may look at their snowblower to replace our fuel-based one, but that’s for another day.
